Side (pronounced see-deh), is a beautiful coastal resort on the Mediterranean. It is approximately 15kms east of Antalya (one of Turkey`s largest cities) and is located on a small peninsula only 800m in length. In this pretty town, modern architecture, chic shops and late night bars stand in juxtaposition with the ruins of an ancient city. Flanked by two stretches of golden beach, surrounded by the sparkling waters of Mediterranean on both sides and bestowed with the endless archeological wonders - Side has aptly prospered as one of the most popular resorts for holidaymakers from across the globe.

History of the City

Side was founded by Aeolians of the Aegean region. The history of the town extends back to the 7C BC. "Side" meant "pomegranate" in the local language. Until the Roman Imperial period, pomegranate was the symbol used on the coins of Side. In the two centuries following Alexander the Great, Side was dominated usually by the Seleucids of Syria and less often by the Ptolemy of Egypt.

The peak period of the city of Side started around 2C BC when it had established and maintained good relations with the Roman Empire. This period continued until the 3C AD. The most impressive of the structures to be seen in town had been constructed during those times. Side lost its prominence during the 4C AD, however it prospered as a clerical center in the 5C AD. With earthquakes, Christian zealots and Arab raids, by the 10C AD, the site was completely abandoned, left to be buried.

The last massive settlement to Side has been in 1895 when Turkish immigrants from Crete were settled in the town. This settlement is the nucleus of the present town. But the old and the new are insolubly merged and intertwined in Side.

Main attractions Side offers for visitors are:

Aspendos
The Aspendos is a theatre, which was built in 167 A.D. by architect Zeno, son of Theodorius. It contains 40 rows of marble banks built against a hilltop and used to accommodate 15,000 people in its heydays. This Hellenistic theatre was built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius and was dedicated to the Gods. It was built by two brothers, as a gift to the city, and till date it is extremely well preserved and very much in use.

Aspendos also has a 225m long historical bridge that was built by an Anatolian emperor in the 13th century. This bridge has been recently restored and houses souvenir shops. Apart from these, Aspendos is endowed with the remnants of a Basilica, Agora and one of the largest aqueducts (100 A.D.) in Anatolia.

Temples of Apollo and Athena
Built in the second half of the second century A.D., these identical looking temples were dedicated to Athena (Side`s patron Goddess) and Apollo.

Manavgat
This waterfall is a cozy stop, with restaurants and shops and attracts many tourists.

Beaches
Apart from the historical treasures, Side is also bestowed with nature`s bounty. Deep blue Mediterranean Sea, gust of fresh air and two extraordinary beaches of golden colored sand on either side.

Some other attractions include the Byzantine hospital (6th century B.C.), Nymphaeum (fountain in the city wall), the Roman bath converted into museum, etc.

Aspendos

Aspendos Theatre-the best-preserved theater of antiquity, with seating for 15,000. Still used today, the theater's galleries, stage decorations and acoustics all testify to the architect’s success. Nearby stand the remains of a basilica, agora and one of the largest aqueducts in Anatolia you've ever seen. The present-day Belkiz was once situated on the banks of the river Eurymedon, now known as the Kopru Cay. In ancient times it was navigable; in fact, according to Strabo, the Persians anchored their war ships there in 468 B.C. before the epic battle against the Delian Confederation. It is commonly believed that Aspendos was founded by colonist from Argos. One things is certain: right fron the beginning of the 5th century, Aspendos and side were the only two towns to mint coins. The town is built against two hills: Buyuk Tepe stood the Acropolis, with Agora, Basilica, Nymphaeum and Bouleuterion or Council Chamber. About one kilometer north of the town, one can still see the remains of the Roman Aqueduct that supplied Aspendos with water. In the 6th century B.C. the Lydians reigned here until they were defeated by the Persians. Until 425 B.C. Aspendos was a member of Delian Sea Confederacy. In 333 B.C. Alexander the Great came to Pamphylia. The Aspendians requested him through an envoy not to occupy the city and offered him 50 gold talents and thousands of horses. The Aspendians did not keep their promise and Aleander invaded the city. He meted out punishments, causing them to pay 50 talents and an annual tribute.

In 190 B.C. Aspendos was Pergamonian then it fell into the hands of the Romans like its neighbouring cities, and had its heyday at this time. Most of the huge buildings of the city date back from that period. It ranked amongst the most important ports and cities in the Byzantine centralization system till the decline of the city. The architect Zenon built the well-preserved theatre of the ancient world in the 2nd century A.D. during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, from Aspendos. The auditorium had a semicircular from and a diameter of 95 metres (285 feet), and it has been preserved including even its upper gallery. 20,000 spectators could find a place here. The higher rows of seats where manes were scratched were preserved for the upper classes. The well-preserved scena building was 30 metres (90 feet) high. Under the scena there were five gates, through which steep stairways at each side-facilitated access to the tiers from the arena. The scena wall was connected to the auditorium through a wooden roof an achieve better acoustics, Over the centuries the marble covering of the scena wall has been lost. From the columns and statues, only socles and bases are now left.
The stadium with a length of 220 metres (660 feet) and a width of 30 metres (90 feet), was situated to the north of theatre. Most of the seats have been damaged.
The Aqueduct, It is 1 kilometre away from the ruined city. It is a good example of the water construction technique of the Romans. The water was conducted to the upper city through this aqueduct using the principle of communicating pipes. The marvelous acoustics of the theatre are unique making possible activities like the Altin Portakal Film Festival and Aspendos Opera-Bale Festivale even today. The site is 45 km away from Antalya.

Temples of Apollo and Athena

The two temples which were built next to each other within a Peripheries plan were situated in the Southern end of the peninsula Side. The one in the East belonged to Apollo and the one in the west to Athena. During the period of Paxromana, the Goddess of Anatolia, Kybele and The God of Moon, Men were purified and sanctified with The Head Gods of Side, Apollo and Athena and this was why the people of Side built those two splendid temples. The temple which was built for the God Apollo, who had been sanctified as The God of light, beauty and art had a rectangular plan with the dimensions of 17x30 m. On top of it there are columns with Corinth heads. 8.90m high and a row of 6x11. The columns around the temple had bases with holes in the middle on stenobath: and this shows us that there were pieces of iron underneath on which the columns were situated.

The temple of Atgena was built next to the Temple of Apollo in the form of a peripheral plan with the dimensions 20x35 m. It is a little bigger than the Temple of Apollo and has columns similar to it. The block on the columns attracts attention with its decorative relief’s.

Manavgat's waterfall

Manavgat Waterfall on the Manavgat River is near the city of Side, 3 km (2 mi) north of Manavgat, Turkey. Its high flow over a wide area as it falls from a low height is best viewed from a high altitude.
Manavgat waterfall is approximately 4km North of Manavgat town centre.
The waterfall like many is not high with foaming white water rushing powerfully over the rocks but a horseshoe shaped more gentle waterfall in Manavgat River.
Situated next to the waterfall so that a good view can be seen and photographs can be taken there is a communal area. For a small entrance fee the waterfalls shady tea garden, restaurants and craft stalls make the falls a plesant, cool resting spot where picnics can be had by all, and a great day out to spend with the family.
It can get a little busy on a hot summers day but its easy enough to be able to walk upstream to escape the crowds and relax.
The waterfall was also depicted on the reverse of the Turkish 5 lira banknotes of 1968-1983.
